Carpathia was one of the famous Cunard line ships which sank after being torpedoed by a German submarine in 1918. This tragedy occurred off the southern Irish coast. It was struck three times – hence the three seashells to represent the gaping holes that would have torn the vessel apart. Fragile shells:tough metal:fragile human lives:tough reality of futile wars that sadly continue to this day.
