FlutterBy by Deb Gartland
Encaustic painting and mixed media

FlutterBy - The main subject of this encaustic painting is a butterfly printed on cotton paper, processed via encaustic painting and then sculpted to form a 3D component on the 2D piece. Pan pastels have been used to enhance the colour of the butterfly - and the background is layers of shellac burn (alternating layers of burn using 'amber' shellac and blonde shellac tinted with white pigment) alternated between layers of clear encaustic medium to create depth and patterning. The inclusion of rice paper with holes burnt in to it creates an additional 'illusion' of depth.
